Things that pet parents must know about their Pekingeses
- Eyes are very sensitive and prone to crusting up if not gently washed or rubbed whenever they film over too much.
- Shouldn't be allowed to jump down from couches, chairs, beds, or other high places. Use dog steps to prevent herniated disc or dislocated kneecaps.
- Are susceptible to breathing problems because of their small noses. When a bout of loud snorting or "reverse sneezing" occurs, gently place fingers across the dog's nostrils to make him breathe through the mouth while holding his body so he doesn't back up and talking reassuringly to him until he calms down.
- Need only moderate exercise to stay fit and healthy.
- Should wear a harness instead of choke collar when taken for walks or rides.
- Easily become very hot or cold, so avoid extreme temperatures.
- Gain weight very easily and quickly, so don't overfeed.
- Should be given a monthly heartworm-prevention pill (such as Interceptor).
- Need regular brushing to keep their coats from getting knots, especially behind the ears. A crop cut or "summer cut" helps prevent overheating.
- Require and return lots of attention and affection. They're exceptionally loving, loyal, fearless, and protective. They're also very smart, curious, and mischievous: They love to play and thoroughly explore their surroundings.
- Will be a very good companion for 11+ years.
